Jonas Brothers, Jordan Pruitt deliver top-notch performances at Six Flags
On June 28, hundreds of teens, especially girls, lined up outside the Old Glory Amphitheatre at Six Flags St. Louis to see the heartthrob boy band Jonas Brothers. They were the second of seven acts in the park's Starburst Thursday Night Concert Series.
The line started forming at 4:30 p.m. and became longer as the hours passed. The rain started pouring, but the line didn't get any shorter. Some of the screaming fans purchased raincoats and umbrellas, while others remained where they were and just dealt with it. By the time they finally started letting everyone in, around 7:30 p.m., the rain had stopped.
Odd girl out
Jordan Pruitt, a 16-year-old singer-songwriter, opened up the show. Pruitt sang a song she wrote called "Outside Looking In."
I later asked Pruitt on MySpace to talk about her songwriting. Responding online, she said she began writing "Outside Looking In" when she was in sixth grade, because she felt she was left out of everything. She didn’t belong to a group of friends and was pushed aside.
In the song's lyrics, she says, "You don’t know how it feels to be your own best friend."
Pruitt said she wrote the line because, growing up, she had no one but herself as a friend. She was the safe girl in school. She didn't make the kind of bad choices, like drinking, that can often make you popular, so she was considered the odd girl out.
"Outside Looking In" was featured last summer in the Disney Channel movie "Read It and Weep."
Jordan began singing at age 4. She has opened shows for The Cheetah Girls, Vanessa Hudgens and High School Musical: The Concert. Her version of "We Are Family" was featured in the Disney movie "Air Buddies."
So how does Jordan handle the pressure of being a star at 16? On her Web site, she gives this answer: "I have amazing people around me. People always tell me to keep my head on straight. With my music, I'm not saying I can change the world, but I'd really like to try."
